Party Pros Share Last-Minute Tips for Republicans to "Party for the President"
Coconut Creek, FL September 2, 2004 -- Bush/Cheney campaign leaders are inviting loyal supporters to "Party for the President" when he takes the podium on Thursday, September 1 at the Republican National Convention in New York.
In an e-mail campaign and on the campaign leader's website (www.georgewbush.com/Party), Republicans are being encouraged to host or attend a party with family and friends to support the President. According to the website, to date, more than 5,000 parties have been registered on the site and Republicans plan to air the excitement with live televised feeds from a number of the celebrations during convention coverage that night.
Party pros Phyllis Cambria and Patty Sachs who wrote "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Throwing a Great Party" (Alpha Books/Macmillan) and "The Pocket Idiot's Guide to Choosing a Caterer" (Alpha Books/Penguin) have put together some easy ideas for a "Patriotic Party" for potential hosts.
"The Republican National Convention is a great excuse to throw a party," said Cambria. "It doesn't matter whether you're a Republican who is supporting the president or a Democrat who wants to critique what the other guy has to say. Either way it's a terrific opportunity to gather a group and have some fun while the political fireworks take place." Sachs added, “You might even be able to rally some additional support by inviting “riding-the-fence” friends to the party.”
Here are some basic hosting helpers:
* Swath your space in red, white and blue.
* Dig through your leftover July 4th party products to see what can be recycled for this event or buy new patriotic designs.
* Visit a local campaign headquarters to pick up election signs, posters and banners to supplement your design.
* Use inverted patriotic skimmer hats as bowls for dry snacks.
* Play a CD of patriotic tunes to welcome your guests to your political party and encourage your guests to sing along to Americana melodies during slow spots in the broadcast.
* Flank your TV set with American flags.
* Frame your entryway with a red, white and blue balloon arch.
* Stage your own balloon or confetti release timed with the televised version.
* Decorate a plain sheet cake with whipped topping, blueberries and strawberries in a flag design. Spell out G.O.P. with a blaze of Fast-Lite birthday candles as your own show-stopper dessert.
* Host a game of "Name That President" by researching facts about past presidents and letting guests guess which president was responsible. Or have guests name as many presidents as they can in a fixed period of time.
